Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the National Assembly for approving President Bola Tinubu’s emergency rule declaration in Rivers State through a controversial voice vote.
Obi described the move as a clear violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), arguing that such a critical decision should have required a recorded vote to ensure transparency and accountability.
In a series of posts on his X handle on Thursday, Obi condemned the lawmakers for bypassing proper procedures, warning that their actions set a dangerous precedent for democracy in Nigeria.
“The Constitution is clear that a two-thirds majority is required for such a decision. You cannot determine that with a simple ‘Aye’ or ‘Nay’ vote,” Obi wrote.
He further expressed concern that if such shortcuts continue, more fundamental democratic rights could be undermined in the future.
“The use of a voice vote for a matter this serious is not just insufficient; it’s a betrayal of the democratic process. Today, it’s a state of emergency—tomorrow, it could be citizens’ fundamental rights,” he warned.
Obi, along with other opposition figures, had earlier urged lawmakers to reject the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State Assembly, calling it unconstitutional. However, the National Assembly proceeded with the approval, sparking widespread outrage.
The former Anambra governor called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand adherence to democratic principles, stressing that any deviation from due process threatens the nation’s stability.
