Wike Steps In to Pay Medical Bills for Victims of Abuja Truck Explosion Tragedy

In a heartwarming gesture of compassion, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has pledged to cover the medical expenses of the victims involved in the devastating truck explosion near Karu Bridge, along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, on Wednesday.

This tragic accident resulted in the loss of 10 lives and left 30 others with severe burns, many of whom are currently hospitalized. The Minister’s commitment was revealed in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, on Thursday.

According to reports from the FCT Emergency Management Department, the explosion was caused by a collision between a truck and multiple vehicles. Seven of the casualties were rushed to the National Hospital, while six others with minor injuries received treatment. However, three victims with severe burns and crush injuries are still receiving care, and sadly, one person succumbed to third-degree burns during resuscitation efforts.

Upon learning of the tragedy, Wike immediately directed the Mandate Secretary for Health and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to ensure prompt medical attention for the injured. Dr. Fasawe was on the ground at Asokoro District Hospital, providing care and overseeing the treatment of the 17 victims brought in.

Wike expressed deep sympathy for the families of the deceased and emphasized that the accident, though tragic, was avoidable. He also urged road users, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to strictly adhere to speed limits to prevent further accidents. In addition, the Minister called on the Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to step up enforcement of traffic rules.
