In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The unanimous judgment, delivered by a five-member panel on Friday, emphasized that issues related to the leadership or membership of a political party are internal matters and should not involve the courts.
The Supreme Court’s decision overturned the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Enugu, which had previously upheld Anyanwu’s removal by a Federal High Court in Enugu on December 20, 2024. The apex court also declared that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case filed by Aniagwu Emmanuel, further cementing the legitimacy of Anyanwu’s position within the PDP.
This victory marks a significant moment in the PDP’s leadership saga, reaffirming the internal autonomy of political parties in Nigeria.
