Brazilian superstar Vinicius Junior delivered a heart-stopping stoppage-time winner as Brazil edged past Colombia 2-1 in a dramatic South American World Cup qualifier on Thursday.
The Selecão took an early lead in Brasilia when Raphinha converted a sixth-minute penalty after Vinicius was fouled by Daniel Muñoz. However, Colombia fought back with a stunning equalizer from Luis Díaz in the 41st minute, courtesy of a pinpoint assist from James Rodríguez.
Colombia dominated much of the second half, testing Brazil’s defense and forcing Alisson Becker into action. But the Liverpool goalkeeper was forced off in the 78th minute after a nasty collision with Davinson Sánchez, leading to an extended stoppage time.
With seconds left, Vinicius stepped up and fired a rocket that took a slight deflection before nestling into the net—sending the home crowd into wild celebrations.
“Scoring for Brazil is always special. Every time I play, it feels like the first time,” an elated Vinicius said post-match.
The result keeps Brazil in second place in the CONMEBOL standings, four points behind leaders Argentina, who face Uruguay on Friday.
Elsewhere in the qualifiers, Paraguay edged Chile 1-0, while veteran striker Paolo Guerrero inspired Peru to a 3-1 victory over Bolivia.
Brazil will now prepare for a mouthwatering clash against arch-rivals Argentina on Tuesday.
