Police Bust Cultists in Anambra: Two Arrested, Firearms and Drugs Seized

In a major breakthrough, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists and seized firearms along with other illegal items during separate intelligence-driven operations.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests occurred on March 22, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime in the state.

In the first operation, police operatives from the Obosi Division apprehended Kosiso Okonwko, a 25-year-old male, during a patrol along Obosi/Nkpor Road. The officers recovered a Beretta pistol from Okonwko, who later admitted to being a member of the notorious Aye Confraternity.

In a second operation, officers from the B Division, with assistance from Mobile Police personnel from the 29 Squadron, intercepted a suspicious tricycle on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Amansea. The vehicle, which was driven by Augustine Okafor, was found to be carrying a Beretta pistol, seven live rounds of ammunition, N15,600 in cash, substances suspected to be hard drugs, and various charms. Okafor, dressed in army camouflage, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his actions, leading to his arrest.

Following the successful operations, Anambra State Police Commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, ordered the immediate transfer of both cases to the tactical unit for further investigation. The Commissioner commended the officers for their swift action and reassured the public that the force remains committed to ensuring safety and tackling criminal activity across the state.
