In a dramatic turn of events, a Spanish appeals court has overturned the rape conviction of former Barcelona and Brazil footballer Dani Alves, citing “shortcomings” and “inaccuracies” in his trial.

Alves, 41, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison in February 2024 after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young woman in a VIP bathroom at a Barcelona nightclub on New Year’s Eve 2022.
