Eid Countdown: Sultan of Sokoto Urges Muslims to Watch for New Moon

As the holy month of Ramadan nears its end, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to watch for the new moon of Shawwal on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

In a statement released by the Waziri of Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, on Friday, March 28, the Sultan emphasized that the sighting of the crescent moon will determine the official end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.

“March 29 marks the 29th day of Ramadan 1446AH, making it the first possible day for moon sighting,” the statement read.

Muslims who sight the new moon are encouraged to report their observations via the official phone numbers provided by the Sultanate Council. Once verified, an official announcement will be made regarding the Eid celebration.

The moon sighting tradition holds deep religious significance, as it signals the beginning of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the joyous Eid festivities for Muslims worldwide.
