A fresh diplomatic row has erupted between Nigeria and China after reports emerged alleging that a Chinese company ordered the shooting of a Nigerian immigration officer. But in a swift rebuttal, the China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria has denied any involvement, calling the claims “utterly false.”

The controversy began after Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, condemned the incident during a press briefing, accusing a Chinese firm of instructing the police to shoot the officer in Niger State. The claim quickly gained traction, sparking outrage and raising concerns over foreign corporate influence in Nigeria.

However, in a statement released Thursday night, the China General Chamber of Commerce—represented by its Director General, Dr. Cui Guangzhen—dismissed the allegations, stating that neither Chinese citizens nor companies played any role in the unfortunate incident.

According to findings from Niger State police, the shooting, which occurred on February 21, 2025, in Minna, was the result of an altercation during an attempted arrest. Officers were reportedly trying to apprehend suspects accused of stealing building materials from a Chinese company when resistance broke out. Amid the chaos, a police officer discharged his firearm, unintentionally striking a passerby—later identified as an immigration officer.
