In a surprising development, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that Muslims in Nigeria may continue their Ramadan fasting as the moon has not been sighted. This declaration from the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) indicates that the anticipated end of Ramadan has been postponed until the crescent of Shawwal is confirmed.
In an official statement released on Saturday, signed by Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the Secretary-General of NSCIA, Muslims were urged to remain vigilant and continue their fasting. The statement called on believers to search for the Shawwal crescent on the 29th of Ramadan, as its sighting would mark the end of fasting and the celebration of Idul Fitr.
“If the moon is sighted in accordance with the prescribed standards, His Eminence will declare Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal, ushering in the joyous occasion of Idul Fitr,” the statement emphasized.
As the nation eagerly awaits confirmation, many Nigerians are holding on to the possibility of celebrating Eid on Sunday.
