Tragedy in Dominican Republic: Former MLB Stars Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco Among Dozens Killed in Nightclub Roof Collapse
A heartbreaking tragedy struck the Dominican Republic early Tuesday morning when the roof of a popular nightclub collapsed during a live performance, killing at least 67 people. Among the victims were two former Major League Baseball players—Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco—as well as Nelsy Cruz, the sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz and a prominent public official.
A Night Meant for Celebration Turns to Horror
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, the nation’s capital, during a performance by beloved merengue artist Rubby Pérez, who also perished in the collapse. Rescue teams were still combing through the wreckage in search of survivors as of Tuesday evening.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the structural failure, though initial reports suggest the roof gave way unexpectedly during the packed event.
Remembering Octavio Dotel: A Dominican Baseball Icon
The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) confirmed the death of Octavio Dotel, a legendary Dominican pitcher who left an indelible mark on the game. Dotel, 51, was born in Santo Domingo and played in 13 Major League Baseball teams over a 15-year career that spanned from 1999 to 2013.
He began his career with the New York Mets and found his stride with the Houston Astros, where he spent five seasons. Known for his versatility and reliability on the mound, Dotel also suited up for the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and concluded his career with the Detroit Tigers. He earned a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 2011 and was honored by the Dominican Sport Pavilion.
“We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of a legend,” LIDOM said in a tribute post. “Dotel’s contributions to Dominican and global baseball will forever be remembered.”
Tony Blanco: A Journey That Spanned Continents
Also killed in the collapse was Tony Blanco, 44, a former MLB player and international baseball standout. Born in San Juan de la Maguana, Blanco had a versatile career as a first and third baseman and outfielder, playing in the U.S. minor leagues for eight years before making his Major League debut with the Washington Nationals in 2005.
Blanco later found success in Japan, where he became a fan favorite with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball, last playing in 2016.
The Dominican Republic Ministry of Sports and Recreation released a heartfelt statement, saying, “His legacy will live on in the history of national baseball. Our hearts are with his family and all those grieving his loss.”
A National Leader Lost
Adding to the sorrow, Nelsy Cruz, the sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, was confirmed dead following the collapse. Cruz, who served as the governor of Montecristi, reportedly contacted President Luis Abinader shortly after the incident, stating she was trapped beneath debris. First Lady Raquel Arbaje confirmed she later died in the hospital.
Baseball World Mourns
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Jr. issued a statement expressing the league’s deep sorrow:
“We are deeply saddened by the passings of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, and Nelsy Cruz. The connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic runs deep. Our thoughts are with their families, the Dominican people, and especially with our colleague Nelson Cruz during this unimaginable time.”
The Dominican Republic, often called the heartbeat of international baseball, has been shaken by the tragedy. As the search for answers continues, the global baseball community stands united in grief, honoring the memories of those lost.
