President Donald Trump has announced a bold new trade policy aimed at imposing reciprocal tariffs on foreign countries. The policy, which will charge countries the same tariffs they impose on the U.S., was revealed in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday.

Trump emphasized that the move is designed to create “a level playing field for American workers,” ensuring that other nations no longer take advantage of the U.S. economy. He also addressed countries with Value Added Tax (VAT) systems, which he considers “more punitive than a tariff,” stating they would face similar treatment.

The president warned against attempts to bypass the new tariffs through third countries and pledged to take action against foreign subsidies that unfairly benefit overseas competitors. Trump made it clear that if foreign countries wish to avoid these tariffs, they can reduce or eliminate their own tariffs against the U.S.

He also reiterated that manufacturing in the U.S. would exempt businesses from these tariffs, calling for fairer trade practices and emphasizing the need for reciprocity in global trade.
