Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially granted FirstBank Group approval to begin the construction of its state-of-the-art, eco-friendly headquarters in the prestigious Eko Atlantic City. The announcement was made during the bank’s ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday.

At the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu presented a certificate of approval to FirstBank, marking the official start of the construction of a groundbreaking 40-storey building that is set to become Nigeria’s tallest structure. The bank has described the project as an engineering and environmental marvel, designed with cutting-edge technology and sustainability at its core. This ambitious project aims to raise the bar for the financial sector in Africa, combining modern aesthetics with eco-conscious design.

Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded FirstBank for leading the way in such a transformative project, thanking the visionaries behind the development of Eko Atlantic City. He also recognized key figures, including Mr. Femi Otedola, for their contributions to the creation of what is poised to become a model city for Africa.

“FirstBank, as always, has taken the lead. I want to thank the visionaries who have created a new city that will serve as Africa’s model city — one we will all be proud of. Well done to your board and management, and I thank the CBN Governor for the approval. We hope similar approvals will extend to other financial institutions as well,” Sanwo-Olu said.

In attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony were Vice President Kashim Shettima, the governors of Ogun and Ondo states—Dapo Abiodun and Lucky Aiyedatiwa—business magnates including Aliko Dangote, the Chagoury Group’s Gilbert and Roland Chagoury, and several prominent figures such as Dr. Deji Adeleke, Tunde Folawiyo, and Bukola Saraki.

With this new headquarters, FirstBank is set to redefine corporate architecture and set a new standard for sustainable development in Africa. The project promises not only to be a landmark in the Nigerian skyline but also a catalyst for further innovation and progress in the financial sector.
