The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated once again, with Governor Siminialayi Fubara and the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly locking horns over governance decisions. The lawmakers issued a 48-hour ultimatum, demanding the dismissal of all commissioners and a fresh list of nominees. However, the state government has dismissed the demand, calling it baseless and politically motivated.

Tensions mounted further as the governor denied receiving any formal request regarding the 2025 budget. Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu debunked rumors of her resignation, reaffirming her commitment to the administration.

In another twist, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced August 9, 2025, as the date for fresh local government elections, a move likely to intensify the ongoing power tussle.

Amid the crisis, Niger Delta leader Asari Dokubo issued a strong warning against any impeachment attempt on Governor Fubara, cautioning that such actions could destabilize the state. Similarly, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has vowed to resist any political maneuvering aimed at removing Fubara, framing the situation as an ethnic battle for the Ijaw people’s political future.
