Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has fiercely criticized President Bola Tinubu for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it a politically motivated move that undermines democracy.

Atiku accused Tinubu of being a “partisan actor” in the crisis that has gripped Rivers, blaming his administration for failing to prevent the escalation that led to the bombing of pipeline infrastructure.

Taking to social media shortly after Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Atiku expressed his outrage.

“Anyone paying attention to the unfolding crisis knows that Bola Tinubu has been deeply involved in the political turmoil in Rivers,” Atiku wrote. “His refusal—or calculated negligence—in preventing this chaos is nothing short of disgraceful.”

The former VP further accused Tinubu of reversing years of peace in the Niger Delta, saying his actions have thrown the region back into violent unrest.

“If federal infrastructure in Rivers has been compromised, the President bears full responsibility. Punishing the people of Rivers State just to serve political gamesmanship is an assault on democracy,” he added.

Atiku’s remarks add to the growing backlash against Tinubu’s controversial decision, with many questioning whether the move was about restoring order or consolidating power.
