Dr. Oz Takes the Wheel: TV Doc Now Runs Medicare as Kennedy Slashes Public Health

Location: Washington, D.C.

In a plot twist no Hollywood writer could script, former TV doctor and wellness pitchman Dr. Mehmet Oz has officially taken the reins of one of America’s most critical health agencies. Confirmed in a narrow 53-45 party-line vote, Oz is now the new administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)—overseeing healthcare for nearly half the U.S. population.

Oz’s confirmation arrives at a volatile moment: public health agencies are being gutted, vaccine wars rage on, and Congress is eyeing Medicaid with a budget-cutting blade. While thousands at the FDA, CDC, and NIH have been laid off, Oz steps into his role as one of the few survivors of President Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s public health purge.

The former Columbia heart surgeon turned daytime TV star has raised eyebrows for his cozy relationship with Kennedy—hosting him and his “Maha” circle (Make America Healthy Again) at his Florida home. Though aligned with Kennedy’s push for nutrition reform and skepticism of mandates, Oz does promote vaccination, a rare departure from the RFK Jr. playbook.

Oz told lawmakers he supports Medicaid work requirements, but not the bureaucratic red tape that could unfairly kick patients out. He also voiced concern that Medicaid expansion without doctor support has made healthcare harder to access for vulnerable groups like kids, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.

Yet the controversy doesn’t stop there.

As Oz steps up, a federal judge in Rhode Island has blocked Trump’s plan to slash $11 billion from Covid-19 and public health programs. The funds, originally approved during the pandemic, support mental health, substance use care, and future pandemic readiness. Twenty-three states and D.C. filed suit, arguing the cuts would cripple the country’s already fragile health safety net.

In a time when America’s healthcare system is hanging by a thread, the appointment of a former talk show host to lead it all has sparked both applause and alarm. Is Dr. Oz the wellness wizard who will revolutionize American healthcare—or is this just another chapter in the reality TV-ification of U.S. politics?
