The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gwarimpa ordered the pretrial detention of former Minister of Labor and Productivity Chris Ngige at Kuje Correctional Centre pending his bail hearing in an alleged fraud case.
Ngige was indicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on eight charges related to alleged contract fraud, abuse of power, and corrupt enrichment during the years he oversaw activities linked to the Nigeria Social Security Trust Fund, between 2015 and 2023.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges. His legal team informed the court that a bail application had been filed, but the prosecution indicated it needed more time to respond. The court granted the request and adjourned the case until Monday, December 15, 2025. Ngige was ordered to remain in pretrial detention until the bail hearing.
According to the charges, Ngige allegedly awarded contracts worth billions of naira to associates and companies linked to him, and is also accused of accepting improper gifts during his time in public office. His lawyer requested bail on health grounds, noting that he had been detained for several days and required urgent medical attention. The prosecution opposed the request, arguing that there was a risk of flight.
The case has attracted public attention due to Ngige’s long political career as a former governor of Anambra State, a federal minister, and a prominent political figure. The next court session is expected to determine whether he will be granted bail as the trial proceeds.
