Six Die, Two Injured In New Year Crash On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day as six people lost their lives in a severe road accident at the NASFAT Junction along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, also left two other individuals with varying degrees of injury. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in Abeokuta.

The Sector Public Relations Officer, Odunsin Afolabi, disclosed that the collision involved two vehicles: a commercial Mazda bus and a Volvo truck. According to the FRSC, the primary cause of the accident was excessive speeding, which led to a loss of control by the driver.

“At about 14:36 hours on January 1, 2026, an auto crash occurred, and the Federal Road Safety Corps rescue team was informed at about 14:40 hours. The team arrived at the scene at about 14:50 hours,” Afolabi stated.

A combined rescue team comprising personnel from the FRSC Mowe Unit, Ibafo Outpost, and the Ojota Ambulance Team responded to the emergency. They were supported by officers from the MTD RCCG Police Division and the TRACE Mowe Division. Together, they worked to clear the wreckage and assist the victims.

The authorities reported that the injured victims were immediately rushed to Famobis Hospital in Lotto for medical attention. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue.

Following the incident, the Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the crash. He emphasized that it is the corps’ standard practice to conduct detailed probes into such fatal occurrences to prevent future recurrence.
