Two persons have been confirmed dead and three others injured following an explosion at a filling station in Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Friday in Daffo community, Bokkos Local Government Area, where an underground fuel tank reportedly exploded during repair work. Initial reports by Punch Newspapers had described the incident as a fuel tanker explosion, but subsequent accounts indicated that the blast took place while workers were fixing a leaking tank at the facility.
According to local sources, the victims were a welder and his apprentice who were carrying out maintenance on the tank when the explosion occurred. The blast triggered panic in the area, leaving three other persons injured.
Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, confirmed the incident, stating that the explosion happened during welding work on the underground tank. He said the injured victims were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Emergency responders were said to have moved swiftly to contain the situation and prevent further damage. However, as of the time of filing this report, there had been no official statement from the police or other emergency agencies regarding the incident.
Fuel-related explosions remain a recurring safety concern in Nigeria, often linked to poor handling, faulty infrastructure, or unsafe repair practices. Authorities have repeatedly urged strict adherence to safety standards in the handling and maintenance of petroleum facilities.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about public safety around fuel storage and distribution infrastructure, particularly in residential communities.
