Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully repelled a fresh attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Yobe State, killing several insurgents during a fierce overnight battle.
The attack targeted the 120 Task Force Battalion in Goniri, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, late Saturday night.
Military authorities said the terrorists advanced from the Mandunari axis around midnight but were detected early by troops stationed in the area.
According to the military, soldiers immediately launched a coordinated counteroffensive that forced the insurgents into a deadly ambush zone.
The operation, which lasted into the early hours of Sunday, was supported by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai and the Nigerian Army Aviation.
Security sources said the combined air and ground assault inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers as they attempted to retreat.
A statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, confirmed that no part of the military camp was breached during the encounter.
“Troops of Operation Hadin Kai dealt a crushing blow to ISWAP terrorists during the failed attack on the 120 Task Force Battalion Goniri,” the statement said.
The military added that several terrorists were killed, while weapons and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
Recovered items included a General Purpose Machine Gun, two PKT machine guns, five AK-47 rifles, belts of ammunition, and other combat materials.
The army also disclosed that wounded soldiers are currently receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition.
Military authorities noted that exploitation operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents and consolidate gains recorded during the operation.
The latest confrontation came barely 48 hours after troops reportedly neutralised dozens of terrorists during another coordinated attack on military formations in Buni Gari, also in Yobe State.
In a separate operation, troops intercepted suspected logistics supplies allegedly meant for Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters along the Banki-Kumshe route in Borno State.
The interception reportedly occurred during an ambush operation conducted by troops of the 152 Task Force Battalion near the Cameroon border.
Military sources revealed that suspected insurgents transporting the supplies fled after coming under attack from troops.
Items recovered during the operation included bicycles, fuel containers, drugs, sewing materials, food supplies, phone batteries, detergents, and motorcycle spare parts.
Security officials said intelligence operations are ongoing to dismantle terrorist supply networks operating across the North-East region.
The Nigerian military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgents and preventing them from regrouping within the theatre of operation.
