The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has defended its General Overseer, Enoch Adeboye, stating that he should not be blamed for Nigeria’s current economic and security challenges.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the church responded to growing public criticism and calls for Pastor Adeboye to intervene more directly in national affairs amid rising hardship and insecurity across the country.
According to the church, many Nigerians are making unrealistic demands by expecting the respected cleric to direct or influence how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and government officials manage the affairs of the nation.
The RCCG stressed that while citizens have the right to seek solutions to the country’s challenges, it is unreasonable to expect a religious leader to assume responsibilities that belong to elected public officials.
The church noted that Pastor Adeboye is a spiritual leader and not a government officeholder. It emphasized that he neither occupies a political position nor exercises executive authority over national governance.
“Pastor Adeboye is a clergyman, not the commander-in-chief of the armed forces,” the statement said, adding that despite not holding political office, he has continued to speak on issues affecting the nation through prayers, counsel and public interventions.
The church further maintained that neither Pastor Adeboye nor the RCCG should be held responsible for the economic difficulties, insecurity and other national challenges confronting Nigerians.
It also clarified that the RCCG is a religious organisation focused on spiritual guidance and humanitarian activities, not a political party involved in governance or policymaking.
The statement reiterated that while the church remains concerned about the welfare of Nigerians and regularly prays for the nation, responsibility for addressing national problems rests with elected leaders and government institutions.
The response comes amid increasing public debate over the role of influential religious leaders in addressing governance issues, economic hardship and insecurity in Nigeria. The church, however, insisted that expectations placed on Pastor Adeboye should be guided by the limits of his spiritual role rather than political responsibilities.
