President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major global technology companies, including Meta, Google, X and generative artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, over allegations involving copyright infringement, anti-competitive practices and the unauthorised use of Nigerian media content.

The directive follows growing concerns about how global digital platforms use content produced by Nigerian media organisations without appropriate authorisation or compensation. The investigation is expected to examine whether the companies’ practices comply with Nigeria’s competition and consumer protection laws, as well as applicable copyright regulations.

According to the report, the FCCPC has been tasked with determining whether the activities of the affected technology companies have undermined the rights of local media organisations or distorted fair competition within Nigeria’s digital and media sectors. The inquiry will also assess issues surrounding the use of content by generative AI platforms.

The development comes amid increasing global scrutiny of large technology firms over the use of copyrighted material for search, social media and artificial intelligence systems. Several countries have introduced or proposed measures aimed at strengthening protections for content creators and media publishers.

The outcome of the FCCPC’s investigation could shape Nigeria’s approach to regulating digital platforms, protecting intellectual property rights and ensuring fair competition in the country’s evolving digital economy.
