After being sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism, Kanu was transferred to Sokoto Prison, according to his legal team. The IPOB leader was moved from the custody of the Department of Security Services (DSS) in Abuja to a high-security prison in Sokoto State shortly after the sentencing.

His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the news and expressed concern about the transfer. He stated that it separates Kanu from his family, legal representatives, and supporters. According to him, the distance could limit visits and legal consultations.

The transfer occurred less than 24 hours after Judge James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on multiple terrorism charges. The court also ordered that he remain in protective custody with restricted access to communication devices due to assessed security risks.

Kanu’s legal team believes the transfer could complicate appeals. They argue that keeping him away from the federal capital, where future court proceedings are likely to take place, could hinder his defense.

Security analysts suggest the government may have chosen Sokoto for security reasons. High-profile inmates are sometimes transferred to prisons considered more secure or less likely to be targeted.

This transfer has reignited the debate about prisoners’ rights, equitable access to legal aid, and the broader political implications of Kanu’s case.
