Bayelsa State Announces Three Days of Mourning After Deputy Governor’s Death

The state of Bayelsa has declared three days of official mourning for its late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, following his sudden passing on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

Governor Douye Diri announced the mourning period in a statement issued by the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Guidance, and Strategy, Ebiowou Koku-Obiyai. The mourning period began immediately, and all government flags were ordered to be flown at half-staff throughout the state.

The governor described Ewhrudjakpo’s passing as a moment of profound sorrow and shock for both the government and the people of Bayelsa State. He expressed his deepest condolences to the Lieutenant Governor’s wife, Mrs. Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, his children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Federated Community of Ofoni, former Governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and the citizens of the state.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, 60, collapsed while performing official duties on Thursday morning and was rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Yenagoa, where his death was later confirmed. He had served as Lieutenant Governor of Bayelsa since 2020 and was highly respected for his contributions as a public servant, having previously served as Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure and Senator for Bayelsa’s West Senatorial District.

In a gesture of mourning, Governor Diri prayed for comfort and strength for the bereaved family and the entire state, asking that the late Senator’s soul rest in peace.

The announcement of the mourning period comes amid numerous expressions of grief from political leaders and organizations across Nigeria, who have praised Ewhrudjakpo’s dedication to service and leadership.
