The crisis within the Accord Party in Osun State has deepened following the emergence of a rival gubernatorial candidate, just days after Governor Ademola Adeleke was announced as the party’s nominee for the August 8, 2026, gubernatorial elections.
The faction, which distanced itself from the national party leadership, held a separate congress in Osogbo where it nominated Clement Bamigbola as its gubernatorial candidate. Hundreds of delegates from various local government areas across the state reportedly attended the congress.
The faction leaders argued that the process that resulted in Adeleke’s nomination was flawed, insisting that the national party chairman lacked the legitimacy to oversee the gubernatorial nomination. They maintained that their own congress followed due process and reflected the will of the state’s grassroots members.
This development has created uncertainty in the Accord Party’s preparations for the 2026 elections, as both factions claim control of the party’s structure and platform. Political observers note that the situation could lead to protracted legal battles and potential intervention by electoral authorities.
Governor Adeleke, who recently defected from the People’s Democratic Party due to internal disagreements, was welcomed by the Accord Party leadership as a strong contender capable of retaining power in Osun State. His rise was widely publicized and supported by various party figures.
However, the faction’s counter-nomination has raised concerns about the party’s unity and cohesion at a time when opposition parties are already ramping up their election strategies.
Analysts say the crisis reflects the broader challenges facing smaller political parties in Nigeria, where leadership disputes and conflicting claims often undermine electoral prospects. Experts warn that if the internal division is not resolved, it could undermine the party’s chances in what is expected to be a very close gubernatorial race.
As election preparations continue, attention is now focused on how the Accord Party leadership will address the crisis, whether reconciliation efforts will be successful, or whether the dispute will ultimately end up in court.
