The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident carrying heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua. The suspect, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before a Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the driver faces a four-count charge connected to the tragic incident. The charges include dangerous driving causing death, which contravenes Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act. He was also charged with reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1) of the same Act.
Additionally, Kayode was accused of driving without due care and attention, resulting in bodily harm and property damage. The fourth count revealed that the suspect was driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, a violation of Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
The presiding magistrate granted the defendant bail for ₦5,000,000 with two sureties in like sum. However, the court ordered that he be remanded in custody until he fulfills the bail conditions.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. The crash claimed the lives of Joshua’s friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. While the boxing star and the driver survived with minor injuries, Joshua has since been discharged from the hospital to continue his recovery at home.
