The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has strongly condemned the fresh impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, by the State House of Assembly. In a decisive statement, the group declared that Ijaw Youths reject impeachment moves, describing them as contrary to the wishes of the people, and called for the immediate removal of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

IYC President, Alaye Theophilus, addressed the press in Port Harcourt on Thursday, just hours after the lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, commenced proceedings to impeach Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. Theophilus expressed the council’s dissatisfaction, stating that the Ijaw Youths reject impeachment plots which they believe are being orchestrated to destabilize the state. “The latest developments in Rivers State have revealed the true enemies of the state and as such we call for the immediate sack of the FCT Minister, the person of Barrister Nyesom Wike,” the group stated. The IYC leader accused the former governor of being an “enemy of democracy and good governance” who has been fomenting trouble and unrest in the oil-rich state.

While condemning the legislative actions, the IYC reiterated its support for the re-election bid of Governor Fubara and commended President Bola Tinubu. “The IYC and the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality are behind your re-election bid for 2027 and that of Siminalayi Fubara for his second term as Governor of Rivers State,” Theophilus added. The impeachment move marks the second attempt in less than a year to remove Fubara and Odu following a political fallout between the governor and Nyesom Wike. The crisis previously led to a presidential intervention and a temporary state of emergency. Despite the latest escalation where Ijaw Youths reject impeachment attempts, the executive arm of the Rivers State government is yet to officially comment on the matter.
