The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has declared that President Bola Tinubu has addressed long-standing concerns of marginalisation in the South-East, expressing confidence that the region will deliver up to 90 per cent electoral support for the President in the 2027 general election.
Umahi made the statement while inspecting ongoing construction work at the Alaoji axis of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, noting that the scale of federal projects currently underway in the South-East reflects the administration’s commitment to equitable development.
He stated that it is not yet the turn of the South-East geopolitical zone to produce Nigeria’s president, urging the people of the region to focus on strategic political alignment rather than sentiments.
According to him, the appointment of a South-Easterner as Minister of Works, a position the region had never previously held, demonstrates the goodwill and trust President Tinubu has shown toward the zone. He added that the number and scale of ongoing federal infrastructure projects across the South-East were unprecedented.
Umahi said that during his eight years as deputy governor and governor, not a single federal road project was executed in his state, but under the current administration, multiple projects worth trillions of naira are underway across the region.
He stressed that key appointments, including security positions, and major development projects in the South-East show that the administration is committed to inclusive governance. He urged the people of the region to reciprocate the President’s goodwill with political support.
The minister also called on South-East leaders and political stakeholders to guide their supporters toward strategic decisions ahead of the 2027 elections, adding that the region should rally behind President Tinubu.
Umahi further assured the contractors handling the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway project of prompt fund releases to ensure timely completion, especially ahead of the President’s planned tour of key projects in the South-East and South-South zones scheduled for May.
