United States President Donald Trump has sparked fresh global debate after warning that it may not be safe for Iran’s national football team to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Trump said that although the Iranian team is technically welcome at the tournament, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could expose the players to serious security risks.

In a message posted on his social media platform, the US leader stressed that the safety of the athletes should be the top priority, noting that the current geopolitical tension makes their participation questionable.

According to him, allowing the team to travel and compete during such a volatile period could place their lives in danger.

The comment marks a shift from Trump’s earlier position after his recent meeting with Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, at the White House.

At the time, Infantino indicated that the Iranian team would still be allowed to take part in the global tournament despite the crisis.

The next edition of the World Cup is scheduled to be jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it one of the largest sporting events in the world.

However, the war that erupted after military strikes involving the United States and Israel has dramatically reshaped the geopolitical landscape, raising concerns about how the crisis could affect international events, including global sports competitions.

The controversy surrounding Iran’s participation has been further amplified by a separate incident involving members of the country’s women’s football team during an overseas tour.

Seven players from the visiting squad reportedly sought asylum in Australia after they were labelled “traitors” at home following a protest before a match.

The protest, which reportedly focused on issues surrounding women’s rights and restrictions in sports, triggered strong reactions from authorities in Iran.

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke, later confirmed that the players were given the opportunity to privately consider their options after requesting protection.

According to Burke, one of the athletes eventually withdrew her asylum request after discussions with teammates, while the remaining players were moved to a secure location for safety reasons.

The team later departed Sydney and travelled onward to Kuala Lumpur as part of their international fixtures.

The unfolding developments have highlighted how geopolitical tensions are increasingly influencing international sports, with experts warning that conflicts between nations could create new challenges for global sporting bodies.

As the situation continues to evolve, attention is now turning to FIFA and tournament organisers to determine whether political tensions could ultimately impact Iran’s participation in the highly anticipated World Cup.
