President Bola Tinubu has praised Nigerian-trained doctors for their outstanding contributions to the United Kingdom’s healthcare system, describing them as a vital part of the workforce.
Tinubu made the remarks during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle as part of his official visit to the UK.
He noted that Nigerian professionals, particularly in the medical field, have continued to distinguish themselves globally, adding that their impact within the National Health Service remains significant.
According to the president, Nigerian-trained doctors and nurses rank among the largest groups of international medical professionals serving in the NHS, playing a crucial role in delivering healthcare services across the country.
Tinubu highlighted that beyond healthcare, Nigerians in the diaspora have continued to contribute immensely to sectors such as business, technology, education, and the creative industry.
He described the Nigerian community in the UK as one of the most dynamic diaspora groups, stressing that their achievements continue to strengthen the longstanding relationship between both nations.
The president also referenced global stars of Nigerian heritage, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as examples of the deep cultural and human ties linking Nigeria and the UK.
Tinubu further emphasised the importance of sustained bilateral cooperation, especially in addressing shared challenges such as terrorism and regional instability in West Africa.
Reflecting on historical ties, he acknowledged the influence of British legal and institutional frameworks on Nigeria’s governance system, noting that elements such as the judiciary, parliamentary structures, and civil service have roots in British traditions.
He also expressed appreciation to the UK for supporting Nigerian pro-democracy activists during the military era, recalling how he personally found refuge in the country during that period.
The state visit marks a significant moment in Nigeria-UK diplomatic relations, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to deeper collaboration in trade, security, and cultural exchange.
Tinubu concluded by expressing optimism about the future, stating that the partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to grow stronger based on shared values and mutual respect.
