The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has returned over ₦3.9 billion in recovered stolen funds to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), marking a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.
The funds, totaling ₦3,936,145,822, were officially handed over at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja during a brief ceremony on Thursday.
Speaking on behalf of EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, Secretary to the Commission, Mohammed Hammajoda, emphasized that the recovery was achieved through meticulous investigations and the exposure of fraudulent dealings within the NNPC system.
He reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering resolve to tackle economic and financial crimes across the country.
“We will continue to put ourselves on the line to serve over 220 million Nigerians,” he stated, noting that several operatives have made sacrifices in the course of duty, with more expected as the fight intensifies.
Hammajoda added that the EFCC remains committed to executing its mandate with courage, professionalism, and integrity.
Receiving the recovered funds on behalf of NNPC, Executive Vice President (Downstream), Mumuni Dagazau, expressed appreciation to the commission for its support.
He described the recovery as a major step toward accountability and system reform within the oil sector.
“NNPC has had its struggles over the years, but this recovery shows that progress is being made. We are proud of this collaboration and will continue to rely on EFCC’s support,” Dagazau said.
The development underscores ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to strengthen transparency and recover public funds lost to corruption, especially within critical sectors like oil and gas.
