Nigeria’s Supreme Court is set to deliver judgment in two high-profile political cases involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rulings that could redefine opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The cases centre on leadership disputes and the extent to which courts can intervene in internal party matters.
In the ADC case, former Senate President David Mark is seeking to overturn earlier decisions that allowed a leadership dispute suit to proceed. His legal team argues that party leadership issues are internal affairs and should not be subject to judicial interference.
However, opposing counsel insists the case is valid and that the lower courts acted within the law in allowing proceedings to continue.
The dispute has already led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the Mark-led leadership pending final judicial determination.
In a separate case, the apex court will also rule on the PDP leadership crisis linked to its controversial national convention held in Ibadan.
A faction led by Taminu Turaki is asking the court to validate the convention, which was previously nullified by lower courts for breaching an existing court order.
Opponents argue that proceeding with the convention despite a restraining order undermines the rule of law and justifies the earlier rulings against it.
The Supreme Court’s verdict in both cases is expected to clarify the legitimacy of rival factions and set a precedent on judicial involvement in party affairs.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the decisions could significantly influence political alignments and the strength of Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
