The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he has not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State, dismissing growing speculation over his political stance.
Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike insisted that any decision on endorsement would only be made after consultations with a political coalition comprising members of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress.
“I have not endorsed anybody and I cannot endorse somebody until the joint coalition meets,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor further revealed that the coalition is actively strategising ahead of the 2027 elections but declined to disclose details of their plans.
“We have loyalists in PDP, we have loyalists in APC… we have put ourselves together and it is a political strategy because we have somebody we will fight,” he added.
Wike also addressed his relationship with the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, making it clear that both camps are no longer aligned politically.
“You know that we and Fubara are not working,” he stated.
He accused the governor of failing to honour an earlier agreement reached with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in the presence of Bola Tinubu, an agreement that reportedly helped avert impeachment proceedings.
“The Assembly withdrew the impeachment before the president… now you are too smart on what you agreed,” Wike said.
The political rift between Wike and Fubara marks a significant shift in Rivers State politics, especially considering that Wike had supported Fubara’s emergence as governor in 2023.
The crisis has since evolved into a prolonged power struggle over control of political structures in the oil-rich state, contributing to tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the ongoing disputes, Wike maintained that his endorsement decision would be guided by collective political strategy rather than individual preference.
