President Bola Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Navy for its achievements in protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain, stating that the force has successfully eliminated piracy and significantly reduced crude oil theft in the country’s territorial waters.
The President made the remarks on Monday during the Nigerian Navy International Fleet Review held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event formed the centrepiece of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, which was established on June 1, 1956.
Addressing naval officers, military leaders, and international guests, Tinubu commended the service for strengthening maritime security and protecting economic assets critical to national development.
According to him, the Navy’s use of modern surveillance systems, rapid response operations, and coordinated maritime patrols has improved safety across Nigeria’s coastal waters.
The President noted that the force’s efforts have helped curb illegal activities at sea, improve community security, and support economic growth through safer maritime trade and energy operations.
Tinubu expressed confidence that the Navy would continue to play a key role in protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and supporting the country’s growing blue economy.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, three naval vessels — NNS Mambila, NNS Gurara, and NNS Oloibiri — were officially commissioned. The ceremony also featured a presidential fleet inspection and the presentation of new colours.
Beyond maritime operations, the President acknowledged the Navy’s contribution to internal security efforts, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
He praised the professionalism and bravery of the Navy’s Special Boat Service, describing its role in complex security missions as commendable.
Tinubu urged officers and personnel to maintain high operational standards and continue improving their capabilities to meet emerging security challenges.
He said the Nigerian Navy has evolved from a modest force into one of Africa’s most respected naval institutions, contributing significantly to national stability and economic prosperity.
The President added that the service has become a symbol of continental leadership and remains a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture.
As the Navy marks seven decades of service, Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the force in its mission to safeguard the nation’s waters and strategic interests.
