Journalists were locked out of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as security operatives took over the premises ahead of a crucial plenary session.

At around 11 a.m., our correspondent and a journalist from The Cable were stopped at the entrance. When questioned, a police officer bluntly responded, “That’s the instruction. You cannot enter.”

Outside the complex, several reporters remained stranded while a heavy deployment of security personnel—including police officers, civil defense operatives, and members of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps—stood guard.

Access roads leading to the Assembly were also barricaded, causing traffic disruptions around Mobolaji Johnson Avenue and the main entrance.

Amid the tense atmosphere, speculation is mounting that Speaker Mojisola Meranda may step down, potentially paving the way for the dramatic return of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, made a bold reappearance at the Assembly last Thursday, asserting his claim to the Speaker’s seat.

With the plenary set for 1 p.m., all eyes are on the Lagos Assembly as the unfolding power struggle takes center stage.
