In an effort to combat the growing menace of counterfeit medicines in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has unveiled a groundbreaking mobile app designed to empower Nigerians in the fight against fake drugs.
The newly launched Greenbook app, which serves as a comprehensive database of registered drug products in the country, offers a simple yet powerful tool for identifying legitimate, NAFDAC-approved medications. The announcement was made by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, during the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop on drug traceability, awareness, and the agency’s pediatric policies, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Counterfeit drugs have become increasingly sophisticated, and NAFDAC is committed to staying ahead of these fraudsters by leveraging modern technology to protect public health. Adeyeye emphasized that the Greenbook app is a vital resource for both consumers and healthcare professionals alike. By entering a product’s name, brand, or registration number, users can instantly verify if the product is listed in the Greenbook, confirming its authenticity and safety.
“This is a major step in ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe, effective medicines. The Greenbook app will help users avoid dangerous counterfeit drugs that could jeopardize their health,” said Adeyeye, who was represented by Fraden Bitrus, NAFDAC’s Director of Post-Marketing Surveillance.
Nigeria has made history by becoming the first African nation and the second in the world to adopt this cutting-edge technology in the fight against fake medicines. Adeyeye called on all stakeholders in the healthcare sector to join forces with NAFDAC to eliminate substandard and falsified medical products from the market.
Rivers State’s Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, expressed her support for the initiative, emphasizing that the state was fully committed to working alongside NAFDAC in the battle against counterfeit drugs. “Our task force, which includes NAFDAC, is dedicated to removing these dangerous products from circulation and protecting the lives of Nigerians,” Oreh said.
NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director, Oligbu Chukwuma, reassured the public that the agency’s state coordinators were actively monitoring the situation, implementing stringent measures to eradicate counterfeit drugs across the country.
