In a controversial move that’s sure to spark more fan backlash, Manchester United has confirmed a 5% increase in season ticket prices for the 2025-26 season. This marks the third consecutive year of price hikes, despite ongoing protests and a strong call from supporters to freeze costs.

The price increase, averaging around £2.50 per game, comes as the club grapples with rising operational expenses. While the club has frozen ticket prices for under-16s, fans aged 66 and above will receive a 25% discount. However, United’s decision to introduce a new “game categorisation” system for non-season ticket holders is causing major concern. This could see higher prices for higher-profile games, further adding to the financial burden on matchday attendees.

United’s Chief Executive, Omar Berrada, defended the rise, explaining that the club’s financial struggles and the need to stay competitive in the Premier League required the price adjustments. “We understand any price rise is unwelcome, especially during a period of underperformance on the pitch,” Berrada said. “But we believe it’s necessary to keep the club financially stable and to invest in improving the team.”

While the hike is smaller than many feared, it comes on the heels of widespread fan protests over previous pricing decisions and the club’s ongoing ownership issues. The Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) voiced disappointment, emphasizing that a price freeze would have been a powerful statement, especially given the club’s struggles on the field.

Furthermore, the introduction of a £10 charge for fans selling their tickets back to the club within 14 days of a match, alongside increased parking fees, has further irked supporters.

The timing of this price hike, amid United’s struggles in the Premier League and their mounting debt, will likely intensify the pressure on the club’s owners, particularly as fans continue to demand changes. With the team sitting at a disappointing 13th in the league, many supporters are questioning whether this financial strategy will truly lead to a brighter future or further alienate loyal fans.

As the season ticket renewal deadline approaches, Manchester United’s financial decisions are set to dominate the headlines — and fans’ frustrations are likely to escalate.
