Trump Revokes Secret Service Protection for Biden’s Children, Citing Cost Concerns

March 18, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

In a move that has sparked widespread debate, President Donald Trump has revoked Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden, the adult children of former President Joe Biden. The decision, announced on Monday, has drawn sharp reactions, given the historical precedent of security provisions for former presidents’ families.

According to reports, Trump justified the move by highlighting the significant taxpayer burden of the protection details. Sources indicate that Hunter Biden’s security detail consisted of up to 18 Secret Service agents, while Ashley Biden had around 13 agents assigned to her. The president was particularly critical of Hunter Biden’s recent travels to South Africa, a country that was recently removed from the U.S. economic assistance program due to policy disagreements.

“It’s completely ridiculous how much taxpayer money has been wasted on this. Hunter Biden, in particular, has taken advantage of this system,” Trump reportedly said during a closed-door briefing.

This decision comes in contrast to Trump’s own post-presidency security arrangements. In 2021, after leaving office, Trump extended Secret Service protection for his adult children—Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Tiffany Trump—for an additional six months. The extended protection reportedly cost taxpayers approximately $1.7 million.

Critics argue that revoking security protection for the Biden family is politically motivated. Supporters of the decision, however, claim it is a necessary step to reduce unnecessary government spending.

As the controversy unfolds, political analysts suggest that this move could further deepen partisan tensions in Washington, particularly as the 2026 midterm elections approach. The Biden family has yet to release an official statement regarding the revocation.
