Tragic Abuja Truck Explosion: Death Toll Rises to Eight as More Victims Succumb

The death toll from the devastating truck explosion near Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway has climbed to eight, according to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Department (FEMD).

The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday evening, involved a truck carrying compressed natural gas (CNG) and multiple vehicles, resulting in a massive inferno.

Speaking at the scene on Thursday, FEMD’s Acting Director General, Abdulrahman Mohammed, confirmed that six victims had initially been reported dead, with four burned beyond recognition. Sadly, two more injured victims succumbed to their injuries on Thursday morning, pushing the toll to eight.

“Five people were confirmed dead at the scene yesterday. One more victim passed away later, making it six. Unfortunately, two others died this morning, bringing the total fatalities to eight,” Mohammed stated.

Beyond the casualties, the impact of the explosion has been severe, with at least 14 vehicles completely burned and 30 victims currently receiving treatment across various hospitals in the FCT.

According to FEMD, eight patients are being treated at Karu General Hospital, 10 at Customs Hospital, 11 at the National Hospital, and one at Aso Clinic. Authorities are also checking other hospitals for additional victims.

Emergency responders continue to assess the situation, while investigations into the cause of the tragic incident remain ongoing.
