The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has stepped in to address the ongoing case involving Patience Jonathan, former first lady, and the detention of 15 of her former domestic staff. The workers have been held for over six years, allegedly connected to the theft of jewelry and other valuables, sparking controversy and legal battles.
The detained individuals, Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Sunday Reginald, Vivian Golden, Emeka Benson, Boma Oba, Salomi Wareboka, and Sahabi Lima, were arrested after being accused of stealing items valued at around ₦200 million, including seven gold bangles, several Samsung air conditioners, and six flat-screen televisions.
The case first came to court in 2019, with 18 charges against the staff ranging from conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, armed robbery, and theft. Despite the serious allegations, the NBA is now actively working with stakeholders, including the Bayelsa State Government, legal representatives, and Patience Jonathan herself, to bring a resolution to the long-standing issue.
A source close to the NBA shared that conversations have already started with key parties involved, such as Jonathan’s legal team and the Attorney General of Bayelsa State. The NBA’s goal is to resolve the matter quickly, ensuring that the rights of all parties are safeguarded.
“We’ve engaged with the former first lady, various lawyers, and the Attorney General of Bayelsa to seek a swift resolution. The matter has attracted significant attention, and we are determined to handle it expeditiously,” the NBA source stated.
One of the main hurdles in the case’s progression has been delays related to the differing legal teams for each defendant, with each lawyer conducting their own cross-examination. Additionally, personal circumstances, such as a defendant giving birth, have further slowed down proceedings.
The NBA remains committed to working with all relevant parties to expedite the case, highlighting the need for a fair and just conclusion to this prolonged legal battle. With all involved parties engaged, it is hoped that a resolution will come soon to bring closure to the matter.
