Rwanda has appointed Algerian tactician Adel Amrouche as the new head coach of the national team, Amavubi, just weeks before their high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) confirmed the appointment on Sunday, bringing in Amrouche to replace German coach Thorsten Spittler.
The 56-year-old is no stranger to African football, having recently led Tanzania at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His extensive coaching experience includes stints with Burundi, Kenya, Libya, and Botswana.
Amrouche’s first major test will be against Nigeria on matchday five of the qualifiers, a crucial clash set for March 21 at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
Rwanda currently tops Group C with seven points, making the upcoming fixture a defining moment in their World Cup qualification campaign.
