The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the federal government, vowing to resist any further increase in electricity tariffs. The union described the ongoing reclassification of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) as a ploy to exploit Nigerians and vowed to mobilize nationwide protests if the hike is implemented.

In a communiqué released after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja condemned the move, calling it “economic violence against the working class.”

“The ruling elite is determined to worsen the suffering of Nigerians through incessant tariff hikes, increased taxation, and economic strangulation. We will not stand by while the people are subjected to capitalist profiteering,” the statement read.

The union also took a firm stance on telecommunications tariffs, warning telecom companies to comply with the agreed 35% increase instead of the initially proposed 50%. If the new rate isn’t implemented by March 1, 2025, the NLC vowed to enforce compliance using “all necessary instruments.”

Furthermore, the NLC addressed the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, asserting its commitment to reclaiming the party from “reactionary forces” and ensuring it remains a political platform for Nigerian workers.

The Congress urged all affiliates and industrial unions to stay on high alert, promising to resist any anti-people policies and uphold the rights of Nigerian workers.
