President Bola Tinubu has praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” on his 88th birthday, acknowledging the lasting impact of his contributions to Nigeria’s growth. Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s influential role in shaping the nation’s political landscape, both during his military and civilian leadership, and noted that even his “sometimes controversial” interventions in national affairs have been pivotal in shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.
In a heartfelt tribute on Wednesday, President Tinubu recognized Obasanjo’s decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, commending the former president for his consistent presence at critical moments in the country’s history. Tinubu recalled Obasanjo’s instrumental role in bringing an end to the Nigerian Civil War, recalling how, as a Nigerian Army colonel, he accepted the surrender from Biafran Army Commander Col. Philip Effiong in 1970.
The president also highlighted Obasanjo’s leadership following the tragic assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, emphasizing his commitment to transitioning the country to civilian rule in 1979. Tinubu further praised Obasanjo’s return to power in 1999 as a civilian president, after being released from prison a year earlier, marking the beginning of a new democratic era that has now endured for 25 years.
Beyond his presidency, Tinubu recognized Obasanjo as an influential figure on the global stage, describing him as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter.” His efforts in conflict resolution and governance advocacy have earned him international respect, particularly across Africa.
While acknowledging Obasanjo’s sometimes controversial interventions, Tinubu affirmed their importance in helping to shape national policies and providing a check on leadership. The president also celebrated Obasanjo’s unwavering dedication to national unity, peace, and progress, offering prayers for his continued strength and wisdom.
“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Tinubu concluded.
