Tensions have escalated between the Ifon and Ilobu communities in Osun State, leading to renewed violence over a long-standing land dispute. At least one person has reportedly been killed, while several houses and a health center have been set ablaze.
Eyewitnesses described a night of chaos, with gunshots ringing out since Thursday evening and fires continuing into Friday morning.
According to Akeeb Adekunle, spokesperson for the Olufon of Ifon, the crisis has been brewing for weeks. “Hoodlums from Ilobu have been attacking our people, and despite reporting to the police, no help came. Last night, they invaded the disputed areas, set buildings on fire, and tragically, an elderly woman was killed and burned in her house,” he claimed.
On the other hand, Chief Adegoke Ogunsola from Ilobu accused Ifon indigenes of terrorizing their people. “Our people have suffered multiple attacks, yet no action has been taken. Just last night, hoodlums stormed our community, shooting sporadically and setting homes on fire,” he alleged.
The Osun State Police spokesperson, Akeem Adeoti, confirmed that security forces have been deployed to restore order and prevent further bloodshed.
With tensions still high, residents fear further violence if authorities do not intervene swiftly.
