Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has appealed for the immediate release of pupils, teachers, and other victims abducted during recent attacks on schools in Oyo State.

In a statement shared on his social media platform on Wednesday, Obi expressed sadness over reports surrounding the victims’ condition and urged those responsible for the abduction to allow compassion and humanity to guide their actions.

He stressed that children should never become targets of violence, regardless of any grievances, adding that every child represents hope for families and the future of the nation. Obi called on the kidnappers to release the captives without delay.

The Senate also joined calls for the rescue of the victims, urging security agencies and the Federal Government to intensify efforts aimed at securing their freedom.

During plenary, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of those who lost their lives during the attack. Senators described the incident as another disturbing reminder of the security challenges facing schools and rural communities across the country.

A motion presented by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari highlighted the impact of the attack, including the deaths recorded and the abduction of pupils, teachers, and other residents in affected communities.

Lawmakers used the debate to advocate stronger implementation of school protection programmes and improved intelligence gathering to prevent future attacks.

Several senators also raised concerns about the effectiveness of security spending. Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole called for greater accountability in the management of security resources, arguing that increased funding must translate into improved protection for citizens.

Senator Sani Musa echoed similar concerns, urging closer legislative oversight to ensure resources allocated to security agencies are properly utilised and produce measurable results.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, commended security personnel for their efforts while emphasising the need for sustained action against criminal groups threatening communities and educational institutions.

He noted that addressing insecurity requires cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, and citizens.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen security nationwide and pledged continued efforts toward ensuring the safe return of all abducted victims.

The latest calls come amid growing public concern over attacks on schools and increasing demands for more effective measures to safeguard students, teachers, and communities across Nigeria.
