The Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Federal Government to discontinue the rehabilitation and reintegration programme for repentant terrorists as concerns over insecurity continue to mount across parts of the country.

The resolution was passed during plenary on Tuesday following deliberations on the worsening security situation and renewed attacks on military personnel and communities in affected regions.

The motion on insecurity was sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, who drew attention to the increasing threats posed by insurgent activities and the need for stronger measures to address the challenge.

During debate on the motion, Senator Joseph Ikpea proposed an additional prayer calling on the Federal Government to halt the rehabilitation and reintegration of former insurgents who had surrendered to security authorities. The proposal was seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and subsequently adopted by the chamber without dissent.

The Senate’s position reflects growing concerns among lawmakers over the effectiveness and public perception of programmes aimed at deradicalising and reintegrating former members of terrorist groups into society.

In addition to the call to discontinue the programme, senators expressed concern over the broader security situation in the country and stressed the need for more decisive action to protect lives, support affected communities and strengthen the country’s security architecture.

The resolution represents the official position of the Senate on the matter but does not in itself constitute legislation or automatically alter existing government policy. Any decision regarding the continuation or termination of the programme rests with the Federal Government and relevant security authorities.
