Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over what he described as the government’s failure to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Amaechi made the demand following the recent deadly bomb attacks in Maiduguri, which left at least 23 people dead and many others injured.
In a strongly worded statement, the former minister said any government that cannot guarantee the safety of its citizens has no justification to remain in power.
He accused the Tinubu administration of failing in its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property, describing the situation as unacceptable.
Amaechi argued that the Maiduguri attacks reflect deeper issues in Nigeria’s security system, which he said has deteriorated under the current leadership.
He further criticised the government for what he called repeated promises without concrete action, noting that citizens continue to live in fear despite official assurances.
According to him, the growing wave of violence across the country has made insecurity a daily reality for many Nigerians.
Amaechi also condemned what he described as a disconnect between leaders and the people, accusing those in power of maintaining luxurious lifestyles while ordinary citizens struggle with safety concerns.
“Nigerians cannot continue to mourn and live in fear while those in authority live lavishly,” he said.
He questioned how many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken to address the crisis.
The former governor insisted that leadership requires accountability and urgent action, especially during times of national distress.
As of the time of reporting, the presidency has not issued an official response to Amaechi’s remarks.
The development adds to growing political criticism surrounding the government’s handling of security challenges across the country.
