The Benue State Police Command has arrested five Pakistani nationals during separate intelligence-led operations in Otukpo and Ugbokolo, recovering 35 mobile phones in the process.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, said the arrests followed credible intelligence concerning the activities and movements of the suspects in the state.
According to the police, three of the suspects were arrested on August 4 at Adoka Motor Park in Otukpo Local Government Area while they were attempting to board a vehicle to Adoka village. During preliminary questioning, the suspects reportedly told investigators that they had travelled to Otukpo to market cosmetics and mobile gadgets. Police, however, said none of the claimed products was found in their possession.
In a separate operation conducted on August 5, two other Pakistani nationals were arrested at a hotel in Ugbokolo following another intelligence report. The suspects reportedly identified themselves as dealers in Android mobile phones.
A search of their belongings led to the recovery of 11 Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones. Police said further investigation and operational follow-up resulted in the recovery of an additional 23 Tecno Camon 50 Pro phones and one Infinix Hot 60, bringing the total number of recovered devices to 35.
The five suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi, where the police said discreet and comprehensive investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding their presence, activities and movements in the state.
The command said the arrests form part of its intelligence-led policing efforts to identify potential security threats and prevent criminal activities. It also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies about suspicious persons, movements or activities in the state.
